Kybella Information & Instructions

What is Kybella®?

Kybella® is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that reduces submental fat — commonly known as a “double chin.” Its active ingredient, deoxycholic acid, is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that helps break down and absorb dietary fat.

When injected into the fat beneath the chin (or other small body areas off-label), Kybella destroys fat cells permanently, which are then naturally eliminated by the body over time.

Treatment Areas:

  • Under the chin (submental area) – FDA-approved
  • Off-label areas: jowls, bra fat, inner thighs, lower buttocks (consult with provider)

What to Expect:

  • The number of treatments varies, but most patients need 2–4 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart.
  • Swelling is expected and may be significant in the first few days.
  • Gradual fat reduction will occur over 4–6 weeks as the body metabolizes the destroyed fat cells.
  • Final results can be seen after the full series is complete.

Pre-Treatment Instructions

To minimize risk of bruising, swelling, and discomfort:

5–7 Days Before:

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications/supplements if approved by your physician:
  • Aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen
  • Fish oil, vitamin E, garlic, ginkgo biloba
  • Start Arnica supplements (optional) to help reduce bruising

24–48 Hours Before:

  • Avoid alcohol and smoking
  • Avoid major dental procedures or vaccinations near the treatment date
  • Stay well-hydrated and eat a light meal before your appointment
  • Notify your provider if:
  • You’ve had prior neck surgery, cosmetic treatments, or filler in the area
  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have difficulty swallowing
  • You’ve had past issues with healing or infection

Day of Treatment

  • Arrive with a clean, makeup-free neck and chin area
  • A temporary numbing agent or cold compress may be applied
  • Multiple small injections will be placed in a precise grid pattern in the treatment area
  • The procedure takes about 15–30 minutes
  • You may experience burning, stinging, or tenderness for a short time after treatment

Post-Treatment Instructions

Normal Side Effects (1–14 Days):

  • Swelling: Most noticeable in the first 2–3 days. May last up to 1–2 weeks.
  • Tenderness or soreness in the treated area
  • Bruising or redness
  • Numbness or firmness in the area (may last several weeks)
  • Mild nodules or lumps as fat cells are broken down (typically temporary)

Aftercare Tips:

  • Apply a cold compress (15 mins on/off) during the first 24 hours to reduce swelling
  • Sleep with your head elevated for the first 2–3 nights
  • Wear a chin compression garment (optional but may help swelling)
  • Use Tylenol (acetaminophen) as needed for discomfort (avoid NSAIDs unless directed)
  • Stay well-hydrated and avoid salty foods to minimize water retention

Avoid for 3–5 Days:

  • Strenuous exercise or activities that increase blood flow to the face/neck
  • Heat exposure (e.g., saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga)
  • Massaging the treated area
  • Makeup or skincare on the treated area for the first 24 hours
