Hylenex Information & Instructions

What is Hylenex?

Hylenex (generic name: hyaluronidase) is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid (HA), the primary ingredient in most dermal fillers (e.g., Juvederm, Restylane, Versa). It is used to:

  • Correct overfilled or uneven areas
  • Reverse unwanted filler results
  • Treat complications such as lumps, nodules, or vascular occlusion
  • Prepare an area for new filler placement

Hylenex starts working within minutes, and visible improvement typically occurs within 24–72 hours, though full breakdown can take up to 7 days or more depending on the amount and location of filler.

Important Notes

  • Hylenex only dissolves hyaluronic acid-based fillers. It does not affect other filler types (e.g., Radiesse, Sculptra).
  • In some cases, multiple sessions may be needed to fully dissolve the filler.
  • Because your body naturally contains some HA, there is a chance Hylenex may affect your own natural HA as well, although it regenerates over time.
  • If you’re planning to re-fill the area, this is typically done 7–14 days after Hylenex to allow full enzyme clearance and tissue settling.

Pre-Treatment Instructions

To minimize bruising and improve safety:

  • Avoid blood thinners for 3–5 days prior:
  • Aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, fish oil, vitamin E, garlic
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before treatment.
  • Optional: Begin Arnica supplements 1–2 days prior to help reduce bruising.
  • Let your provider know if you have any:
  • Allergies to bee stings or animal proteins
  • Previous reaction to hyaluronidase
  • History of anaphylaxis

Post-Treatment Instructions

What to Expect:

  • Mild swelling, redness, tenderness, or bruising at the injection site.
  • Dissolution can start within hours, with continued improvement over several days.
  • Treated areas may feel softer or slightly sunken temporarily — this is normal as filler dissolves.
  • If significant filler was removed, you may notice volume loss or asymmetry.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Apply a cold compress (10–15 minutes at a time) for the first 24 hours to reduce swelling.
  • Use Tylenol (acetaminophen) if needed. Avoid NSAIDs for 24 hours.
  • Sleep with your head elevated the first night.
  • Avoid touching, pressing, or massaging the area unless directed by your provider.
  • Hydrate well — staying hydrated supports tissue recovery.

Avoid for 24–48 Hours:

  • Strenuous exercise
  • Alcohol and smoking
  • Makeup on the treated area
  • Heat exposure (saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga)
  • Other cosmetic procedures in the same area (e.g., microneedling, lasers)

If Planning Re-Filler

If you plan to have the area re-treated with new filler:

  • Wait at least 7–14 days post-Hylenex to allow:
  • Complete enzyme clearance
  • Swelling to subside
  • Accurate assessment of tissue structure
